Chronic Venous Insufficiency Treatment

VEIN TREATMENT Q & A

How Is Chronic Venous Insufficiency Diagnosed?

Reflux Venous Ultrasound Testing is used to diagnose chronic venous insufficiency, including varicose veins.

This ultrasound is part of a vein consultation with a physician. The ultrasound images allow the physician to view veins and valves and determine the movement and direction of blood. The ultrasound is conducted both lying down and standing, helping to diagnose if venous insufficiency is present and determine the best course of treatment.

How Are Diseased Veins Treated?

Initially, physicians may take a conservative approach and recommend:

  • Elevating the feet when possible
  • Compression stockings
  • Exercise
  • Weight loss

Conservative methods do not repair existing vein damage but may help improve circulation. To prevent further damage, physicians may recommend advanced minimally invasive treatments including:

  • Endovenous ablation
  • Microphlebectomy
  • Sclerotherapy

Endovenous Ablation

What Is Endovenous Ablation?

Laser or radiofrequency energy is sent through a tiny catheter inserted into a patient’s vein, which heats the vein and causes it to collapse and close.

Microphlebectomy

What Happens During Microphlebectomy?

Physicians remove varicose veins through tiny surgical incisions. This is the recommended treatment for large superficial varicose veins.

Sclerotherapy spider vein treatment

Sclerotherapy

How Is Sclerotherapy Performed?

A chemical, or sclerosant solution, is injected into the vein, causing it to shrink from within. This procedure is often recommended for small varicose veins and spider veins. Physicians can use ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy to treat deeper veins that are underneath the skin at various depths.

What to Expect from Vein Treatments?

Dr. Eradat will carefully explain how to prepare for the prescribed procedure. He will also provide written instructions for any required after care and follow up visits. The expected end result is for legs to look better, feel better, and have improved blood flow.
